Changed your mind? How to get the course you want

A student working on her laptop on a sunny day

The UCAS deadline for applying to university for 2023 entry closed in January. So you have probably completed and submitted your application. But are you having second thoughts about your course choice?

If so – don’t panic! It’s not too late to change your mind and apply for another course.

This blog will tell you the best ways to secure a place on the course you want, even if you have already submitted your application.

Ready to accept your offer?

If you have doubts about the course you have applied for, don’t accept any offers until you decide what to do. Some universities might put a deadline on their offer, so make sure you decide in plenty of time so you don’t get automatically declined. But remember that once you accept an offer, you might have less flexibility to change your course.

UCAS Extra

Even though the UCAS deadline has passed, you can still submit more applications if you haven’t used all five of your UCAS choices. But remember that you might not get the same consideration as those who applied before the UCAS deadline.

If you have used all five of your choices and aren’t holding any offers (or have declined all your offers), you can use UCAS Extra at no extra cost. Simply apply for your new chosen course in UCAS Hub. With UCAS Extra, you apply for additional courses one at a time, so you should be prepared to wait until your chosen institution gets back to you before you apply for another course.

UCAS Extra is available from 23 February until 4 July this year. Find out more about UCAS Extra on our website.

Clearing

After 5 July, you can apply for alternative courses through Clearing. Most people enter Clearing once they have got their exam results, but if you already have the grades you need to apply for a specific course, you don’t need to wait!

On the 5 July, the University of Stirling will publish our courses available through Clearing on our website. If a course you fancy is on the list, give our friendly Clearing team a call and they will be able to help you get a place on your chosen course.

Check out our Clearing site for more details about the Clearing process.

Check out our flexible courses

Even if you have accepted an offer at the University of Stirling, we understand you might still change your mind. That’s why, apart from a few exceptions, most of our undergraduate courses have a flexible structure.

During your first and second year, you can study modules completely unrelated to your core degree. So a Film and Media student, for example, can study modules in Spanish and Latin American Studies, Psychology, Politics, or many more.

If you find yourself falling in love with another subject, you could graduate with a combined degree, or in some cases, change your degree entirely! We have over 170 degrees and course combinations for you to choose from.

Choosing your degree subject is a big decision, so it’s important you are completely happy with your choice. If you change your mind, it’s okay. There are plenty of ways to get on the right path for you.

No matter what you choose, we hope you consider joining us at the University of Stirling. We are one of the top 40 universities in the UK (Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023) and ranked UK top 30 for student satisfaction (National Student Survey 2022). We can’t wait to welcome you!
