Five tips to help you manage coursework stress

As great as being a university student is, there’s no denying that juggling coursework deadlines with personal commitments can feel overwhelming at times.

If you’re struggling to keep on top of things, don’t panic – there are steps you can take to get back on track. Here are five tips to help you manage your workload and ease the pressure.

1. Make a list, then prioritise

When facing multiple deadlines, it can be hard to know where to start.

A helpful approach is to create a list of everything you need to do, along with the deadlines. Once you’ve got your list, prioritise tasks by due date and tackle them one at a time instead of trying to do everything at once. Using a planner or calendar can help you stay organised and track your progress.

2. One step at a time

It can feel daunting when you look at a task as a whole, but breaking it down into smaller steps can help.

For example, if you’re writing an essay:

  • Start by mapping out ideas and gathering your research.
  • Create an outline with key points organised into sections, such as the introduction, main body, and conclusion.
  • Work on one section at a time, setting small, achievable goals for each part.

By focusing on each step, you’ll build momentum and find the process far more manageable.

3. Take regular breaks

It might feel counterproductive, but regular breaks are key to staying focused.  The Pomodoro technique is a great way to focus on a single task at a time – set a timer for 25 minutes and concentrate on that single task until the timer’s up, then take a five minute break. This will help clear your head and leave you feeling refreshed.

4. Get the support you need

Please don’t struggle alone – support is always available.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out to your personal tutor. They’re here to listen and will give you advice to help you move forward.

You can also book time with our Student Learning Services team for help with learning strategies, study tools, time management, and more.

Our friendly counsellors and student advisers are also here for you – get in touch with them through the Student Services Hub – and there’s a confidential helpline you can call 24/7.

5. Look after yourself

No matter how busy you are, it’s important you prioritise looking after yourself.

Try to get a good night’s sleep regularly, eat well, stay hydrated and aim to exercise a couple of times a week. If you’re on campus, check out the Loch View wellbeing suite for a space to unwind.

When you look after your wellbeing, you’ll find it much easier to manage your workload.
