How to bounce back

Student picking out a book in the library

Your first year of university is full of new things: new classes, new expectations, new ways of thinking.

At some point you’ll probably fail a quiz, misread an assignment, or feel completely lost in a lecture. When that happens, it’s easy to think, “Maybe I don’t belong here.”

Setbacks aren’t proof that you’re not fit for university. They’re proof that you’re learning something new. Every student, faculty member, and professional you admire has failed along the way. What makes the difference is what you do next.

Here are a few strategies from Student Learning Services to help you bounce back.

Practice where it’s safe

Use practice quizzes, study groups, and rough drafts to try things out before the stakes are high. Getting it wrong early is how you get it right later.

Treat first attempts as drafts

Ask your module coordinators whether revisions or resubmissions are allowed, and use their feedback to improve instead of seeing it as a final verdict.

Reflect, don’t just react

After a setback, ask yourself what worked, what didn’t, and what you’ll try differently next time.

Talk it out

Share your struggles with classmates, personal tutors, or module coordinators. You’ll quickly find you’re not the only one.

Notice your growth

Look back at where you started. Progress is easier to see when you stop comparing yourself to perfection

Mistakes are information. They show you where to focus, what questions to ask, and how much you’ve grown. So take risks, ask for help, and give yourself permission to not get it right the first time.

You’re not supposed to have it all figured out yet. You’re here to figure it out.
