Tips for making the most of the new semester

Whether you’re just about to start your course or are getting ready to pick up your studies after the winter break, January is a great time to get organised and set yourself up for success.

Here are our top tips to help you make the most of the new semester:

1. Set realistic goals

Setting yourself clear and realistic goals is a great way to stay focused throughout the year.

Before you start the semester, or as early as you can in your studies, think about what you want to achieve, then use the SMART method to come up with manageable goals. Don’t forget to reward yourself when you meet your milestones – it’s important to celebrate your progress!

2. Get organised early

Preparation can make all the difference as the semester gets underway. Take some time to note down important dates like coursework deadlines, assessments and exams. You can then build a plan around your timetable.

If you need help creating a plan, check out Canvas for tips from our Student Learning Services team.

3. Ease yourself in

With so much to adjust to, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at the start of the semester. The best way to avoid this feeling is by starting with small, manageable tasks in the first week or two, then gradually increase your workload. This will help you build (or rebuild) your focus.

4. Use the support available to you

As a Stirling student, you have access to a wide range of support to help you succeed in your studies.

If you have additional needs, get in touch with our Accessibility and Inclusion team as early as you can in the semester. The team can help with lots of things, including exam arrangements and needs assessments for assistive technology.

If you think you would benefit from a personalised learning strategy, make an appointment with one of our Student Learning Services advisors.

Your personal tutor is also available to support you with any academic queries you might have.

5. Find a balance that works for you

Life as a student can be busy, but it’s important you still take the time to do the things you enjoy – balance is key to staying motivated.
